“ A distinguished member of the Humane Society” by Sir Edwin Landseer.

We recently received a letter from Luisa Pontello, Assistant Library and Collection Manager at The Kennel Club about the famous Sir Edwin Landseer painting “A distinguished member of the Humane Society” which depicts a Landseer Newfoundland lying on the quay side . The painting is currently on loan to the Kennel Club from the Tate and is on display in the current K.C. Art Gallery’s exhibition “Pets and Prizewinners”.

This painting is of course of enormous significance in the history of our breed and suffered many years of neglect languishing in the store rooms of the Tate. It was never displayed and deteriorated more and more as the years passed. It was the Newfoundland Club of America which finally led a concerted campaign of fund raising which resulted in a complete restoration of the painting. The painting was then exhibited in the United States for five years . Now it has returned to the U.K. and all the Newfoundland Clubs were pleased that it is currently on loan to the Kennel Club where it will be safe and admired.

However, we are obviously worried about the fate of this painting if it is returned to the dungeons of the Tate. It has come to our attention that the Kennel Club would be interested in persuading the Tate to allow it to retain the painting indefinitely. The Northern Newfoundland Club would whole heartedly support such a request and we have added our name to the Kennel Club’s list of supporters who are endeavouring to ensure the long term safety of this irreplaceable painting.

If any members wish to be included in this effort to retain this wonderful painting for people to enjoy please contact :

Interested in a Kennel Club Visit?

We have also received an invitation from the Kennel Club to view the exhibition which includes the Landseer Painting. Appointments can be made by telephoning 020 7518 1064 or e mailing

Alternatively, the Club could organise a day visit which would include touring the Kennel Club as well as visiting the Exhibition.Tours consist of a presentation,( starting at 11.00 a.m.) a tour of the Art Collection, a goody bag and refreshments on arrival. The Kennel Club have a list of dates of tours which are open to all to attend.

           The dates are:
           27 October, 18 November, 27 November.

Alternatively ,the Club could organise a private tour up to 25 people and the K.C. are happy to discuss dates. Tours would be free of charge with just a charge for Lunch . However, to make such a tour viable obviously would involve enough people wanting to pay for a coach to London. It would be possible perhaps for some members to just have a day in London while forgoing the delights of the Kennel Club! This would help to boost numbers to pay for transport costs.

If any members are seriously interested please contact the Secretary Jill Barker on 01283 703283.

A date would then have to be arranged and the coach costed.

Southern Newfoundland Club
- Please help with their cancer survey

The SNC have a Health Forum which this year is carrying out research on the incidence of cancers in Newfoundlands. They would very much appreciate NNC members or friends contributing to the survey.

Please contact Jan Groves who will send a questionnaire, or available for download.
