CLASS RESULTS & CRITIQUES

It was a great honour to be asked to judge the Northern Newfoundland Club’s 2014 open show, so my thanks must go to the committee first, and then to the exhibitors for entering their dogs under me. Thanks must also go to the trusty stewards who kept the ring moving and the paperwork correct.
Presentation of the exhibits was exemplary and temperaments excellent, with many a wagging tail on my approach.
There were quite a lot of level bites rather than scissor, this doesn’t worry me unduly as all of these dogs are more than capable of holding a rope or life jacket between their teeth, just something we need to monitor, more worrying, are the occurrence of incorrectly shaped eyes and the “loose eye” (eyelids not sitting snugly against the eyeball). These eyes are wrong and leave the mucous membrane open to the elements allowing foreign objects, such as grass seeds to enter the orifice and become a nuisance at best and an expensive, painful infection at worst. I’m glad to say that there were only a few loose eyes in evidence on the day. I’m not a fan of round eyes, although not strictly wrong according to the Kennel Club’s Breed Standard, they do not give the typical melting expression we come to expect from this lovely breed, but a hard, staring and much less attractive expression.
Muscle tone was mixed, some dogs had vey little and this, of course, affects movement and how a dog holds itself, either in the ring or out and even a poorly constructed dog can benefit from good muscle tone giving it a stronger, tighter frame, reducing the risk of injury and ultimately protecting the joints. Daily exercise, for a grown dog, should consist of a mixture of road work and free running and, where possible, swimming. Obviously puppies cannot do as much road work or free running, but they can swim from a very early age to strengthen ligaments, tendons and muscle.
All of my top winners on the day had excellent muscle tone all over but particularly across the shoulders, allowing free movement of the shoulder, elbow and carpus, and again in the quadriceps mechanisms, giving stability to the stifles and hocks and allowing strong, positive, economy of movement that looks effortless, and that can be maintained for long periods of time. Minor Puppy Dog (3,1)

1st - Mrs S Blake - Littlebears Repeat After Me Sandbears: A real baby and very promising prospect. Dark well shaped eyes, correct muzzle to skull ratio and sweet expression, neat ears, correct length of neck on a good shoulder, parallel front legs, I would prefer a deeper chest but this will deepen with age, moved very well for one so young. Well-presented and handled. Best Puppy Dog

2nd - Mr S & Mrs A Adair - Bridgestone Greg Norman At Darebear: Nicely marked Landseer, dark well shaped eyes, correct square muzzle, adequate length of neck on well-muscled shoulders, plenty of bone but forelegs not standing quite parallel today, lovely level topline, I preferred the curvature of stifle of 1, plenty of time for movement to improve.

Puppy Dog (2,0)

1st - Mr P Patterson & Mrs A/P van Haeron - Buddies For Ever May Brian Harold: Another promising youngster still very raw at present. Dark well shaped eye, square muzzle and strong head, just enough length of neck on broad strong shoulders, Parallel front legs and plenty of heart room in the forechest, a touch soft in the topline but a good spring of rib and good angles behind, won on movement today.

2nd - Mr K, Mrs S & Miss A Walden - Joalta Storm Warning: An upstanding and very handsome Landseer with loads of bone and plenty of heart room, level topline and good angulation all round, his left hock turns out slightly on the move but this will improve as he matures and gains more muscle.

Junior Dog (6,3)

1st - Mrs A P Springthorpe - New Angels My Guy At Millthorpe: I really liked this boy who won on movement in this class, a dark eye, lovely kind expression, the right length of neck set on powerful shoulders, parallel front legs with plenty of bone and big, tight feet, level topline and gently curved underline, correct hind angulation gives this dog power and drive on the move.

2nd - Ms S Baxter & Mr D Morris - Thickish Newfoundland Zorbas Dance: I preferred this dogs head to 1. He has dark well set eyes, broad skull, and correct length of neck set on very powerful shoulders, correct length of upper arm, excellent topline and underline, overall he is a very balanced dog but I would prefer more bone.

3rd - Mrs J A & Mr M P Williams - Inkomo White Russian: Immature against the other two males but has a dark eye, slightly long muzzle, good length of neck and adequate shoulder, some positive qualities but I would prefer more hind angulation.

Graduate Dog (3,0)

1st - Ms S Baxter & Mr D Morris - Thickish Newfoundland Zorbas Dance: As per Junior Dog

2nd - Mrs B Turner - Baranova Three Cheers: A lovely big boy who impresses with size and balance, a strong head with dark eyes, muzzle is a little over lipped for me which detracts from an otherwise handsome head, broad and powerful shoulders, well laid shoulder with good balance in upper arm proportions, huge bone and tight feet, powerful hind quarters and good angulation behind.

3rd - Mr & Mrs K Hosie - Newfoundlove New Edition At Shadowrise: A tall dog with unfortunately very light eyes which gives a staring expression, narrow in front giving no heart room, good topline and good angulation through stifle.

Post Graduate Dog (1,0)

1st - Mrs L K Harrison - Sandbears Eternal Flame: A big boy with a little too much lip for me, front legs not parallel in front, well developed forechest, nicely sloping underline, lacks hind angulation through stifle and hock.

Limit Dog (6,0)

1st - Mr D & Mrs C Lyall - Scotiabear Muckle Flugga: Landseer with good markings, a big chunky well balanced dog, dark correctly shaped eyes, broad skull, just the right length of neck set on very powerful, well angulated shoulders, parallel forelegs with huge bone and feet, wide forechest allowing loads of heart and lung room, correct spring of rib and broad powerful rear quarters, excellent rear angulation giving the overall impression of a real power house that can do a day’s work.

2nd - Mrs A P Springthorpe - New Angels My Guy At Millthorpe: As per Junior Dog

3rd - Ms S L Eden - Dawstenbears Mr Gingles: A huge, handsome dog with many fine attributes, dark eye giving a soft expression, good reach of neck and decent shoulders, I would prefer a deeper and wider forechest to open out the elbows and allow greater heart and lung room, good topline and underline, good angles behind allow very good movement.

1st - Mr M Havala & Mrs A Lukacs - Int, Hun, Slov Ch Black Sanderland Milestone: Stood alone but there is no denying the quality of this dog, compact and cobby, dark well shaped eyes, square muzzle and broad skull, just the right amount of neck set on the nicely muscled withers, ruler straight topline and gently sloping underline, short coupled, broad forechest, parallel well boned forelimbs on deep tight feet ,correctly barrelled body and powerful rump, excellent angulation fore and aft give this boy the power to stride round the ring with minimum effort and maximum reach and drive. Reserve Best Dog.

Special Open Black Dog (3,0)

1st - Mrs C Morrell - Morrelham Highland Park: Wow! This dog has matured into an extremely handsome and eye-catching Newf. He gives the overall impression of a majestic and powerful dog fully equipped to do the job for which he is bred. Dark correctly shaped eyes with a melting expression, square muzzle and broad skull, small correctly placed ears, perfect reach of neck set on powerful, well-muscled shoulders, parallel forelegs, with huge bone on big, tight feet, deep chest, broad, strong back and gently sloping underline, well-muscled quarters with excellent angulation through stifle and hock enabled this dog to power round the ring with positive drive. Beautifully handled and presented. Best Dog, Best Black Dog and Reserve Best In Show.

2nd - Ms S Baxter & Mr D Morris - Albanywater Sea Dancer At Davistell: Another quality dog who has matured greatly since I last judged him. Dark, if slightly round eye, square, tightly lipped muzzle, broad skull, good length of neck leads to well-muscled, powerful shoulders, parallel forelegs with good bone and tight feet, chest of the correct depth and width, a good topline and sloping underline, strong quarters and excellent angulation give this dog the ability to stride round the ring with ease.

3rd - Mr & Mrs K Hosie - Newfoundlove My Guy At Shadowrise: In strong competition today. A correct head with dark eyes, good sized dog but needs to broaden throughout for better balance.

Special Open Brown Dog (1,0)

1st - Mr P & Mrs A Patterson - Wilderland Amber Spyglass: This dog impresses with size and substance. A soft expression with strong, square muzzle and correct colour eyes for a brown, strong shoulders and well boned parallel front legs on deep tight feet, good angles throughout, I would prefer a stronger topline, super free mover. Best Brown Dog and Best Brown in Show.

1st - Mr M & Mrs J Groves - Bridgestone Grip It N Rip It: An 8 month well-marked Landseer bitch with correct dark, well-shaped eyes, a very feminine face framed by neat ears, correct length of neck set on well muscled, shoulders, parallel front legs, deep chest and level topline, well-muscled rump, adequate hind angulation, her movement was very positive and balanced for such a youngster, another star for the future from this kennel. 1st - Mr L Jackson - Comfortcove Tie Break: I loved this little girl, so well put together, a real show girl! Dark eyes set in a very pretty face, good length of neck, parallel fore legs, I would prefer a touch more bone for perfection, a correctly barrelled body with very straight topline, and sound rear quarters gave her plenty of drive on the move.

2nd - Ms G Woods - Sandbears Love N'It At Luvminewfs: Such a pretty girl with dark eyes and correct muzzle to skull ratio, good length of neck on well-muscled shoulders, straight legs from front with correct lay of shoulder, good topline and powerful, well-muscled hind quarters, deceptively well boned.

3rd - Mr S M & Mrs K L Hietschold - Krystalcove Denim Opals N Gold At Chrishelkate (Imp Aus): Another pretty girl with a well-developed skull, nicely balanced throughout with excellent bone and angulation all round, should finish well but looks like a late developer.

1st - Ms G Woods - Sandbears Love N'It At Luvminewfs: As per Junior Bitch

2nd - Mrs D A T Kitson - Wanitopa Tidal Reach: Landseer. A rather undisciplined lady in the ring but nevertheless has some very fine qualities. A pretty girl with correct wide forechest, very good bone, level topline, well angulated all round and beautifully muscled all over, giving her strength, reach and drive on the move.

3rd - Mr C & Mrs M Hughes - Sandbears Pick 'N' Mix: Another pretty girl who needs a bit more practice for the ring. She will have a strong muzzle when she finishes. A tall girl with parallel front legs, decent topline, lacks angulation behind.

Post Graduate Bitch (3,1)

1st - Miss M Burton - Tartandug Kerfuffle: A big, solid Landseer girl, beautifully put together giving the impression of great strength and workability, lots of ticking but this doesn’t detract from huge bone, solid and compact body with good spring of rib allowing plenty of heart and lung room, level topline, she messed her handler around but on the move she displayed great reach and drive. Won this class on movement.

2nd - Mrs H Sandham - Sandeast Power Of Love: I thought this girl was going to be my winner but closer inspection revealed a narrow chest not giving enough heart and lung room. Pretty girl with good angulation all round, straight front, very good topline and powerful hind quarters shown to advantage in profile.

Limit Bitch (3,1)

1st - Mr R A & Mrs J Cunliffe - Chrishelkate Cracklin Rose At Lillybears: I have admired this girl for years, pretty face with a kind expression, solid body, huge bone, parallel in front, excellent angulation all round, very powerful shoulders, level topline held on the move, well-muscled hind quarters make her movement positive with plenty of reach and drive.

2nd - Mr B W & Mrs S Wedlake - Sandbears Strike It Lucky At Sealake: All the qualities of 1, a pretty girl with dark, correctly shaped eyes, correct reach of neck, muscular shoulders and excellent bone on tight feet, deep chest and level topline, hard muscled hind quarters used to advantage on the move, giving an impression of strength with grace, just didn’t sparkle as much as 1 today.

Open Bitch (5,1)

1st - Mr B W & Mrs S Wedlake - Ch Alphabear Dancing Queen At Sealake Sh CM: What can I say about this lady that hasn’t already been said? The darkest of eyes, correct muzzle and skull, pretty with a kind benevolent expression, excellent reach of neck on big, well-muscled shoulders, parallel front legs and wide forechest, the deepest of chests going well below her tidy elbows, good spring of rib, ruler straight topline and tapering underline, incredibly powerful hind quarters and perfect angulation behind. This lady is such a big girl you could be fooled into thinking that she may be heavy on the move but she is surprisingly light footed, straight and true watching her from any angle. In hard, fit condition with gleaming coat. Best Bitch, Best Black Bitch and Best in Show.

2nd - Mr W J & Mrs C E Lloyd - Cewrirdwr Llyn Gwynant: Another fabulous girl with all the qualities of 1. Pretty and feminine head with a compact and powerful body, in beautiful condition, she belies her age this girl. Super angulation all round with a level topline, overall she gives the impression of great power with a sweet disposition. A tough decision for me today but in the final run off she failed to move as well as 1. Best Veteran Bitch, Reserve Best Bitch and Best Veteran in Show

3rd - Mrs S M Benyon - Tartandug Ruff Pup Of Kaijasholme: Landseer. Another big girl with plenty to like, fabulous width all through with huge bone, good angulation, just rises a little too high over her loin for me and turns one foot on the move, but a super sort!

Special Open Black Bitch (3,0)

1st - Mrs H Sandham - Sandeast Black Lace: A medium sized girl, pretty with loads of bone. A solid front with excellent angulation all round, deep enough chest, good topline but on the move she tends to throw her legs laterally giving a hectic, windmill effect but her quality in profile and excellent rear angulation won the class.

2nd - Mrs C Morrell - Morrelham Eristoff Black: Another nice bitch with obvious quality, very feminine with a lovely square muzzle, nicely shaped skull, good reach of neck and good lay of shoulder, lacked the angulation of 1, short coupled for a bitch but still a very pleasing picture.

3rd - Mrs P Lucas - Coltrana Indian Summer: Short compact body with a good topline but lacks angulation.

Special Open Brown Bitch (1,0)

1st - Mrs P Lucas - Coltrana Egyptian Gold: A lovely deep brown colour with a lovely topline, lacks angulation and feathering, a very upstanding girl though.

Special Open White & Black Landseer Bitch (4,1)

1st - Mr M & Mrs J Groves - Bridgestone Footjoy JW: A stunning Landseer lady with dark well-shaped eyes, correct muzzle to skull ratio, parallel front legs with loads of bone, enough width in chest and barrelled body with an excellent topline, very powerful hind quarters with good angulation gave her plenty of drive and positivity on the move, she did drop her right shoulder on the turns which cost her today in the final line up, beautifully presented, her white bits are like snow! Best Landseer Bitch and Best Landseer in Show.

1st - Mr R J & Mrs R M Evans - Abbeydore Sea Fiore: I was so pleased to see this fabulous 12 and a half year old bitch still looking every inch the Champion she is. Such a soft and feminine expression, plenty of bone, strong shoulder and correct angulation all round, forelegs parallel from the front view, she is amazing for her age and raised the biggest, well deserved, cheer of the day in the line-up for best bitch, what a cracker!

A big thank you to the NNC Committee for the invitation to judge these inaugural Special Award classes at their Open show and to all of the exhibitors who entered and accorded me the privilege of going over their dogs. It was a super entry with many dogs of great quality and a wonderful opportunity for me as a novice judge to gain experience - thank you all.

Special Award Puppy Dog or Bitch(3,0)

1st - Mr M & Mrs J Groves - Bridgestone Grip It N Rip It: A very promising 8 months old White & Black bitch, mature for her age and with very clean markings. Nicely proportioned skull, scissor bite, dark eye, neat small ears and a feminine sweet expression. Good bone and width all through, straight front with well developed chest, nicely up on her feet. With good angulation and being short coupled and well ribbed she presented a pleasing outline stacked. Moved well with just the right amount of newfie ‘roll’. Pleased to see her later go on to Best Puppy in Show.

2nd - Mr K, Mrs S & Miss A Walden - Joalta Storm Warning: White & Black dog, almost 9 months old. A tall substantial male just beginning to grow into his frame. Head masculine but not overdone, correct bite, dark eyes and a sweetness of expression which somehow welcomes you. Good bone, good reach of neck and angulation. Appeared a little down on his rear pasterns perhaps because he found the carpet slippy but he moved well for a large youngster who is still developing. Lost out to 1 on ticking and topline but has the potential to do well in the future.

3rd - Mr S & Mrs A Adair - Bridgestone Greg Norman At Darebear: 8 months old White & Black dog, litter brother to 1 and lots of the same good qualities including bone and width. Coat has some ticking and he is more upright in the rear but he moved with enthusiasm and a nice balance extending well behind. As a male he needs more time to develop to his full potential.

Special Award Post Graduate Dog or Bitch(14,3)

1st - Ms G Woods - Sandbears Love N'It At Luvminewfs: 16 months Black bitch, small in size but big on quality, particularly those features I find appealing. A very pretty young lady who looked a picture stacked. Dark tight eyes in a feminine head carried on a neck of good length with a super topline and a low set long tail. Good angulation and being well up on nice short pasterns combined to give her impressive drive on the move - a pocket rocket. Ideally I would like a little more width but she is still a Junior and I expect her to body up as she matures.

2nd - Mrs A P Springthorpe - Merrybear Euphoria At Millthrorpe: Another 16 months Black bitch but of completely different type to 1. Much bigger in bone and overall substance but still feminine. Good width of skull, correct bite and a dark tight eye. Very good bone, plenty of width to chest, well placed shoulders and nice big well padded feet. Well ribbed with width and strength through her quarters. Moved well and very attentive to her handler. I preferred her size and substance over 1 but she lost out on topline.

3rd - Ms S Baxter & Mr D Morris - Thickish Newfoundland Zorbas Dance: 14 months Black dog still very much a Junior but developing nicely. Good width and depth of skull, correct bite, eyes dark but showing a little too much haw at present which cost him consideration of a higher placing. Well boned and good width all through, stood nicely on good sized feet with a level topline and correctly set tail. Moved well but not with the sparkle of the first two

A real treat to judge such a wonderful class of great quality - my first five all having multiple CCs or Reserve CCs.

1st - Mr B W & Mrs S Wedlake - Ch Alphabear Dancing Queen At Sealake Sh CM: 5½ year old Black bitch who caught my eye as soon as she trotted into the ring, not because of her size - she is a very big bitch - but because of a remarkable lightness on her feet. Fully mature and in lovely condition her coat is of the correct texture and very dense, perfectly suited to working in the cold and water. Impresses with size and substance but still retains femininity, excellent bone and big tight feet. Good angulation and plenty of chest and width all through, this bitch is strong and powerful and every inch a working dog. Well muscled, she moved effortlessly for such a large bitch. It would be a treat to be ‘rescued’ by her from the water, a task she is perfectly capable of performing. Beautifully prepared and presented, I was delighted to see her later going Best In Show.

2nd - Ms S Baxter & Mr D Morris - Albanywater Sea Dancer At Davistell: 4 year old Black male I have often admired and now in his prime. Not the biggest of dogs but so well proportioned with plenty of bone. A ‘teddy bear’ head with a short broad muzzle and small deep set eyes inviting a cuddle. Excellent front with strong perfectly parallel legs and big well padded cat-like feet. Good width and depth of chest and well sprung ribs. Width and power through his quarters and a tail of reasonable length. Very nicely prepared and well handled he looks noble and handsome on the stack but workmanlike at the same time. Moves out well but has a tendency to lift his tail when excited.

3rd - Mr M & Mrs J Groves - Bridgestone Footjoy JW: Very attractive quality 2¾ years White & Black bitch. Solid black head and clean well defined markings with virtually no ticking. Feminine head with a sweet expression, dark eyes and well set ears. Good reach of neck, deep chest and good angulation front and rear. Just the right amount of bone for her size she is substantial without being heavy. Stands up well on her neat paws and holds her topline stacked and on the move where she is very stylish from all angles. A tighter eye would have made her a serious contender for top spot in this high quality class.
